Artist M. Varma hails from Bihar — Vihara, the land of Buddha. His exquisite Buddha paintings are lapped up by connoisseurs as soon as they are created. This large-format 48"×48" (4×4 ft) canvas depicts the serene face of Buddha Tathagata in bluish grey. The legendary Bodhi tree is stylised as an inverted crescent patterned with golden peepul leaves, seeming to emerge from behind Buddha's head. A glowing vermilion background precipitates into a peaceful white near the shoulder. The meditative, near-closed eyes symbolise that he has not shut out the external world completely. The handsome visage of the Tathagata helps the onlooker dive deep into the inner self and acquire the state of samadhi.
