Vimanam | Kalamkari

Vimanam (also known as Karunkattam) is a traditional two-player Indian board game that blends sharp strategy with the roll of fate. Each player commands a set of six coins, working to move them along a shared path and bear them all off the board before the opponent does. The journey begins outside the board at each player's home, and pieces are set in motion — or sent home in defeat — by the throw of wooden cowries.

Every throw is a small drama. Land on a one, five, six, or twelve and you earn another turn; land on an opponent's coin and send it all the way back to the start — and get another go. But safe squares offer refuge, and the inner stem of the board can only be entered once blood has been drawn. The result is a game of constant tension, calculated risk, and satisfying reversals that keeps both players on edge until the very last piece is borne off.

This edition is rendered in the ancient art of Kalamkari — a hand-painted tradition from South India where natural dyes and fine brushwork bring mythological and floral motifs to life on fabric. Each board carries the unmistakable character of this centuries-old craft, making it as beautiful to display as it is to play.
